News: “Hell No, CEO!”
I was greatly amused by the title of this article, which describes an Eco Farm Conference that folks from Chelsea Green Publishing attended. Â Read it for some pointed discussion of issues in organic food and food safety.

Growing evidence indicates serious health problems can be caused by the consumption of certain genetically modified corn varieties. Â Monsanto tends to do brief, narrow studies. Â This lets them put their products on the market without necessarily proving that they are safe, because many problems do not show up in a brief 90-day study on only one species. Â Some countries have banned the use of GMOs and will not accept imported foods that contain them. Â In America, alas, your best bet is to eat organic — because there is no labeling requirement for GMOs.

6Dec2009 | Elizabeth Barrette | Comments Off | ContinuedNews: Water Problems from Drilling
I was not surprised by this article, which indicates that water problems from drilling are more common than previously claimed. Â Whenever a company or government claims that some problem is “an anomaly” — be suspicious. Â Do not necessarily assume the problem is widespread without evidence, but definitely check to see if there is a pattern of similar problems. Â Resistance to your efforts to find out more should greatly increase your suspicions. Helpful acquiescence should somewhat decrease your suspicions.

This article discusses the relationship between ecology and democracy. Â It’s useful to consider how the systems we create are similar to or different from the world around us. Â Because democracy spreads influence over many people, it resembles the food web in nature where different species influence each other.

Previously we’ve discussed environmental and social issues relating to water. I started using the term “water wars” over 20 years ago to describe what would happen when the American southwest and west seriously ran short of water. During that time, other people have gradually awakened to the danger. Â So far it’s been confined mostly to political and financial squabbles. Â But in India, people are already killing each other over water.

In a previous post about green buildings, we touched on the idea of skyfarms, also known as vertical farming. Everyone has been making a fuss over President Obama’s “first 100 days.” Okay, great, he’s doing a fine job. Â However, Michelle Obama has used the same time to establish her role as First Lady, a job she’s taking very seriously. Â So far, she has started an organic garden (and fended off agrochemical criticism of it) and introduced herself as “Mom-in-Chief.”
