Ni Hao, Kai Lan

There’s a show on Nickelodeon that started maybe a year ago, called Ni Hao, Kai Lan.  Basically, it’s “Dora, the Explorer” but in Mandarin instead of Spanish.  The heroine is a little girl named Kai Lan, who is drawn with a mouth that is cutely off-center, and who has adventures with her animal friends.  The animation looks like Westernized anime, in the same vein as such hit shows as “Samurai Jack” and “Teen Titans.”

I’m trying to decipher what makes the show appealing.  Why would I want to watch Kai Lan instead of Dora, if they were both on at the same time?  If I had just enough money to buy one DVD, why would I walk away with a Kai Lan DVD and not a Dora DVD?  They’re so similar, I doubt I could make the choice.
